Raffles History & Timeline :![]() 1852, 1861, 1862, 1868 the four Sarkies brothers are born in Armenia, Martin, Tigran, Aviet and Arshak Sarkies the build 9 famous Luxury Hotels in Southeast Asia under the Hotel Chain Name Eastern oriental E&O. 1887 opening of the Raffles Hotel in Singapore by the Sarkies Bothers. The Hotel is named after Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore. The first building is made in an old bungalow style overlloking the beach with only 10 rooms. 1890 22 new suites are added to the original construction. 1896 Billard room is added ![]() 1899 the current main building of the Signapore Hotel is completed in a late Victorian Italianate Revival style. 23 more guestrooms replace the original bungalow construction. The dining hall has a capacity to seat 500 people and new for it's time, the Hotel has electricity all around. The Hotels gest the status of a Grand Hotel. 1904 opening of the Bras Basah wing with shops and 30 more suites. 1910 opening of the Raffles Hotel Post office. 1920 adding of a the Ballroom which is voted "cooles Ballroom of the East". 1921 Somerset Maugham arrives at the Hotel for the first time. Every mornings he sits in the Palm court writing his short stories adding the gossip and scandals of the latest dinner parties. 1931 january 9 Arshak Sarkies, the last of the 4 brothers dies 1931 june 10 Tang Men Jim, a businessman from Singapore filed a bankruptcy case against the Raffles Hotel for unpaid food supplies. As a result of the bankruptcy affair the Sarkie family loses the Hotel which is converted into Raffles Hotel Ltd. It's the times of the great depression. 1933 new management with Teddy Troller frop Switzerland. 1933 Charlie Chaplin stays at the Hotel. 1942 World War II gains Singapore which comes under Japanese occupation. The Hotel is renamed Syonan Ryokan. 1945 Singapore becomes British again, the Hotel becomes a transit camp for released war prisonners. 1953 Hollywood Aristocracy arrives at the Hotel with Elisabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner. Sommerset Maugham continues to travel to the Hotel and to take notes for his novels. 1967 The movie Pretty Polly is turned in Singapore, 1987 for its 100th birthday the Hotel is declared a National Monument. 1989 formation of the Raffles Hotels & Resorts Chain with the intention to restore the Singapore Hotel. Thus is created the foundation of a new world class Hotel Management company. 1991 September 16 reopening of the Raffles - Signapore after extensive renovation. 1994 renovation projects for 2 hotels in Cambodia. 1997 November 24 reopening of the Raffles - Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh as a Raffles Hotel. 1997 December reopening of the Grand Hotel d'Angkor as a Raffles Resort; 2005 july 18 Raffles was acquired by Colony Capital, a private investment fund from Los Angeles. 2006 may 11 combination of the Raffles Hotel portfolio with the one from Fairmont Creation of Fairmont Raffles Hotel International FRHI. 2007 opening of Raffles - Beijing, China. 2007 November opening of Raffles - Dubai. 2010 August opening of Raffles Makkah Palace in Marrah, Saudi Arabia. 2010 September reopening of the renovated Hotel Royal Monceau as a Raffles Hotel. The Hotel was made famous through Massimo Gargia organizing the fashion event "The Best" and through the fights between the Hotel and Princess Ira von Fuerstenberg about a multi million Francs Hotel bill (... before Raffles management). 2011 February opening of the Raffles Seychelles resort. 2012 july 31 celebration of the 125 birthday of the Raffles Hotel Singapore. |
